Hello, 3 ingredient blackberry margaritas!! And my first alcoholic beverage on the blog! Yes, this blog is mostly all about health and wellness, but life is about balance and enjoying yourself. And I love a good margarita.

I don’t drink too much these days, but when I do I usually go for tequila. It’s actually one of my liquors of choice. It makes me a happy drunk (unless I have way too much) and doesn’t give me a hangover. Give me a good tequila and some lime juice, and maybe a little sparkling water, and I am good to go.

I decided to make these margaritas sans the sugary mixes and just use all-natural ingredients for a healthier cocktail. They are light and refreshing and make the perfect easy drink to whip together when you want to enjoy yourself. And you won’t feel like you are derailing your health and fitness goals too much (if you have any!).

Like I said, life is about balance, and including the things you love. So go on and workout and then enjoy this margarita with some chips 😉

3 Ingredient Blackberry Margaritas

Margaritas can be really hit or miss. They are either made with a pre-made bottled tequila mix that is too sugary and sweet for my liking. Or they are made fresh with lime juice and high quality tequila and make me oh so happy. These blackberry lime margaritas are the latter, with a fun spin to them.

Here is what you need:

  • fresh blackberries
  • lime juice
  • tequila
  • salt, for the rim

First, start off by salting your glass if you like (see below for instructions).

Then muddle your blackberries and lime juice. To do this, I put them in a wide-mouth jar and used the back of my wooden citrus reamer. But you can use anything wide enough that will work for smashing (wooden spoon, muddler…)

The mixture will be pretty thick with the seeds, but don’t worry about it. Then add the blackberry lime mix to a shaker bottle with tequila and ice. I used an organic 100% agave tequila that the guy at the liquor store recommended. The brand is Dulce Vida and it’s local to Austin! We love it!

Shake it all up until well combined. Finally, pour the margarita mixture into your salt-rimmed glass and enjoy! You can either pour it though the strainer on the shaker so it is not seedy or you can just pour it without the strainer so you get a seeder mix. I poured most through the strainer and then added some muddled blackberries to the top.

That is it!

How to salt a margarita glass

To get the full-on margarita effect while making them at home, you needed a salted rim! Here are 3 simple steps to salt a margarita glass:

  1. On a small serving plate, sprinkle a few tablespoons of course sea salt.
  2. Using a lime wedge, wet the lip or rim of a glass by running the wedge around it.
  3. Turn the glass upside-down and dip the wet rim in the salt, turning in a small circular motion to make sure it gets evenly coated. Tap the glass with your hand to knock off any excess.

Then just fill your glass with ice and pour in your drink.

To make a blackberry margarita mocktails

If you want to skip the alcohol and make a mocktail, follow the directions for muddling and then use sparkling water for the tequila. Plain or a flavored kind will both work.

Substitutions for Blackberry Margaritas

These healthy margaritas can easily be changed or adapted to fit any tastes or preferences. Here are a few substitions to change it up:

  • fruit – if you don’t have blackberries, try substituting another fruit. I would suggest raspberries or strawberries.
  • alcohol – if tequila isn’t your thing, you can use vodka instead. It will change the flavor a little, but still be good!

Favorite snacks to enjoy while drinking margaritas

What’s a good margarita without some chips and dip?! Here are some of my favorite snacks and appetizers to enjoy while sipping these blackberry margaritas:

Two glasses filled with blackberry margaritas topped with blackberries and lime wedges. A straw is coming out of both. Around them is more blackberries and lime wedges and a bottle of tequila is behind them.

  • 3/4 cup blackberries (85 grams)
  • 4 ounces pure agave tequila
  • course sea salt, for the rim

instructions

  • If you are going to salt the rim of the glass, do so now. Pour the sea salt on a small plate. Take a lime wedge, or water, and run it around the rim of the glass. Press the top of the glass into the salt in a circle motion to fully coat. Tap the glass with your hand to knock off any excess.
  • Place blackberries and lime juice in the bottom of a wide-mouth jar or glass. Muddle the blackberries with the lime juice. Add mixture to a shaker with tequila and ice. Shake until well combined.
