Summer is in full swing here and that means no hot beverages. I’m not a coffee drinker, but I do like a warm beverage in the colder months, which is a short stint here in Austin. So bring on the iced beverages! I was first introduced at matcha at Picnik a couple of years ago I believe and since then I’ve loved it! I would be broke if I got one there everyday, so I decided to make my own. And since it’s triple digits in Texas, we are making iced matcha lattes!

What is Matcha?

If you are not familiar with matcha, I’ll give you a quick run down. Matcha is a powder form of green tea. It dates all the way back to China in the 600s. Like green tea, it has a lot of the same health benefits, it is just more concentrated and potent (up to 10 times stronger). Some the health benefits of matcha are:

  • packed with antioxidants
  • helps fight free radicals,
  • detoxifies
  • boosts metabolism
  • relaxes the body
  • calms the mind
  • promotes long term health

It is most commonly used to make tea, but you can find it in almost anything nowadays. It is very earthy tasting, but with the right mix-ins, it tastes wonderful. I’ve put it in coconut butter cups and even used it as a salad dressing!

It really couldn’t be easier than this. Throw your ingredients into a blender and blend! This is what you need:

  • almond milk or dairy free milk of choice
  • matcha
  • collagen (optional, but extra protein!)
  • maple syrup
  • MCT oil
  • coconut creamer
  • salt

This matcha latte is customizable if you don’t like certain things in it. Switch out the maple syrup for honey, leave out the MCT if it’s not your thing, double the collagen, add some cinnamon…whatever you are feeling. This is my go-to base for am iced matcha latte, but I will change it up every so often.

It makes a great morning drink with your breakfast, afternoon pick me up, and even snack. I added some healthy fats and some protein for some substance to help keep you full. I like having it mid morning for a little pick-me-up and treat! Just beware – matcha does have some caffeine in it, so if you are sensitive to that, make sure you are drinking it at an appropriate time and not right before bed!
