What is a Dole Whip made out of?

The ingredients of classic Dole Whip are pineapple, pineapple juice, and vanilla ice cream or cream (either dairy-based or non-dairy). Once blended, it creates a refreshing pineapple soft serve.

How healthy is Dole Whip?

A Dole Whip can be a healthy dessert choice. Since it is made with pineapple, it adds in some fiber, vitamins, and minerals. It is also lower in calories than your traditional ice cream. That being said, it does have a decent amount of sugar added, and something to be mindful of.

When making it at home, you have full control over the quality and quantity of the ingredients. Our version lets the pineapple shine with no additional sweeteners and adds some coconut milk for healthy fats.

Ingredients

  • frozen pineapple chunks
  • light coconut milk
  • salt – optional, but brings out the flavors a little more

How to make a dole whip

  1. Blend. Add frozen pineapple, coconut milk, and sea salt (if using) to a Vitamix or high-powered blender. Blend until smooth and creamy and sorbet consistency, about 1 minute.
  2. Enjoy! Serve immediately or transfer to a bowl and place it in the freezer for 2-3 hours to harden up some. This will make it more scoopable.

Can I use a food processor?

Yes, a food processor will work the same as a blender. You will want to make sure it is a high-powered one so it can break everything down.

Can I freeze leftovers?

Yes, if you have leftovers, you can freeze the extra. Place it in a jar or freezer-safe container and freeze for up to 3 months. The mixture will harden like ice, so you will have to defrost it for a little when wanting to eat it. You can also put it back in the blender to help soften it up.

Pump up the protein

You can easily add a scoop or two of protein powder. I like collagen since it is unflavored or you could use vanilla for extra flavor. Make sure to use one that blends well as you don’t want to be left with a gritty texture.

Substitutions and additions

This dole whip recipe is so simple that you can easily customize it to change it up. Here are some suggestions:

  • pineapple – substitute your favorite fruit! Strawberry, orange, or mango would be delicious.
  • coconut milk – full-fat coconut milk will work instead. You can also use any dairy or non-dairy milk.

And here are some suggestions to change up the flavor:

  • sweetener – if you want yours a little sweeter, feel free to add some honey or maple syrup.
  • protein powder – add a scoop or two of collagen or vanilla protein powder to pump up the protein.
  • vanilla extract – for a little more flavor
  • lime juice – for a more tropical vibe.
