Grilled sweet potato fries!! If you missed it, this week is burger week and I’m sharing all burger themed recipes! We started off with a jalapeño ranch turkey burger and then a bomb burger salad.

With all these burgers, we obviously need some French fries! And what better way then to do them on the grill in the middle of summer!

I’m honestly not sure the first time sweet potato fries came into my life. Maybe in high school, but the first time I really remember them is around 2013-2014. I was doing a paleo challenge and back then white potatoes were frowned upon.

I’m so glad that is over and done with because white potatoes are delicious.

Anyways, I specifically remember getting them one time at Citizen Burger when Michael lived in Charlottesville and became obsessed. Their burgers are absolutely amazing and their fries are just as good.

Every single time I would go visit him (1-2 times a month), I would make us go haha.

Turns out, restaurant French fries are more than likely deep fried in some kind of oil. This is totally fine occasionally, but making them at home is super easy and can be a lot healthier!

These grilled sweet potatoes are lightly coated in one tablespoon of oil and then the grill does the rest of the work. Crispy  and charred on the outside and soft in the middle, without all the excess fat and oil.

Bonus is you don’t have to turn on your oven in the middle of summer!

They make a great side dish for just about any burger and grilled meat. You can also throw them in salads or power bowls. Make them for meal prep, BBQs, picnics, and summer cookouts – everyone will eat them up!

How to Grill Sweet Potato Fries

As much as I love all forms of fries, these grilled sweet potato fries might be a favorite. The char from the grill adds so much flavor without any extra seasonings. All you need is a grill and a few basic ingredients:

  • sweet potatoes
  • avocado oil
  • salt
  • pepper

Glass bowl full of sweet potato wedges.

First light your grill and let it come up to temperature! I used my Traeger, but we have done them on the charcoal grill before and you can also use a gas grill. You want a medium-high heat, about 375-400 degrees.

While your grill is heating up, slice your sweet potatoes into wedges and toss them with some avocado oil and salt and pepper.

Once the grill is hot, add you sweet potatoes, spreading out evenly. Some will be over direct heat and others will be over indirect heat, which is fine.

Grill for about 25-30 minutes until slightly charred on the outside and soft in the middle. You will need to flip/move them around halfway though to make sure they all get evenly cooked. While they cook, make the sauce.

It’s really that easy though! No precooking the sweet potatoes or soaking them in water. The amount of time depends on how crispy you want them and the temperature of your grill, but it’s that simple!

Parsley Tahini Sauce

By now you should know that I need some kind of sauce with all my foods. I’m not really a ketchup kind of person, so I have to get creative with my fries sometimes.

This parsley tahini sauce is so simple, but so flavorful. It’s super thick and creamy, bright and zippy from the lemon and parsley, and pairs so well with the sweetness of the sweet potato fries.

All you need is fresh parsley, tahini, lemon juice, and water! Blend it up until the consistency you like (you can add some water if you want it thinner) and then dip away! My favorite brand of tahini is Soom – if you are looking to try it, use this link to save 10%.

We always have extra and I put it on everything from grilled meats, veggies, and use it as a salad dressing.
